Tuesdays on Beach to Prairie will be on about parenting triumphs, woes and musings as well as what’s been going on the past week. I’ll call those posts, “Little J and Mommy Weekly”.  I am gradually building a blogging schedule and, as I get more of a hang of things, you can expect more regular blogging. I am learning as I go and everything I learn goes into making this a more fun, honest and open exchange of information. I am getting there and I thank you all for being so supportive of my efforts.

Little J’s Birthday Cake

Little J is now a Toddler! Yay! I am a proud mamma.  It’s true what they say, it’s amazing how fast they grow!

When L.J. was born a family friend gave us a gift card to a favorite bookstore and with that card I was able to buy the Mayo Clinic Guide to Your Baby’s First Year: From Doctors Who Are Parents, Too!. This was such a great book for us.  It really helped guide us without being preachy. The advice in the book coincided with what our pediatrician recommended and I am grateful to the authors for their good work. If I had any criticism of the book I would say that it lacks detailed information on developing sleep habits.  Sleep is definitely a challenge for us at the moment.

Before I went back to work I feel like we were developing a good routine but I haven’t been able to master the art of putting baby to sleep since.  I am taking some time in the next few weeks to focus on our bedtime routine and our sleeping habits.  Without sleep mommy is grumpy, unfocused and apparently, accident prone! It’s not that he doesn’t want to sleep but more that he doesn’t want to sleep without mommy. We are working on it but suggestions are welcome.

Little J is a book lover which I am thrilled about.  Now does that mean that he only loves reading them! Of course not.  He loves reading them, running his fingers along the pages to feel the textures and he loves ripping them apart. That said one of my favorite things we have started to do together is point to the words on the page.  I say, “Give me your finger, give me your finger,” and gives me his pointer finger. Then we point to words on the page and read them. He’s a year old, so I get two words or three in before he wants to turn the page but it’s a start. Every now and then I catch him pointing to the book words and pictures and talking to them.

I am working on cutting down his t.v. time. I must admit to having him in front of the t. v. more than I would like, mostly to get things done but it’s not good for his development so I am trying to cut it down.  Besides there is a limit to how much Mickey a mommy or daddy can stand.

I am looking forward to the warmer weather.  We have been outside for walks just three times this spring as that’s all the weather and schedules has allowed so far but I am looking forward to much more outdoor time soon.

So there you have it. Musings, Challenges and Triumphs. Till next week 😉
